About Hydromars

Hydromars is a Swedish NewSpace company which was founded in 2020 and is supported by the ESA business incubation centre Sweden. The company is part of the Scarab Development company group and uses Scarab’s technology concept to develop, validate and commercialize the next-generation water treatment system for human life support, in-space manufacturing and scientific experiments in micro/reduced gravity extra-terrestrial environments.

Hydromars was born with the aim of satisfying the current need of >98% water recirculation to perform the main task of recycling in the spaceships not only to engage humans in long-term, deep-space explorations but also to enable in space science, manufacturing and in-situ water purification.

The technology used by Hydromars has been tested for the treatment of municipal and several industrial wastewaters, desalination, and the concentration of brine in cooperation with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. Demo units have been tested in Greece, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Hydromars’ current prototype, built in 2021, is currently performing tests for spacecraft/outpost wastewater streams, including tests on urine, at Hydromars’ clean-room in Ångström Laboratory, Uppsala, Sweden. Final technology validation in reduced gravity will be performed in 2024 and 2025.

By solving challenges for space, Hydromars also aims to contribute to the long-term survival on Earth, especially where achieved know-how from space can be used to market or create products comprising closed-loop solutions in harsh conditions.
